Sherin Merchant2013-2014 McNair Scholar

http://mcnair.aa.ufl.edu/scholars.aspx

Sherin Merchant is a rising senior at the University of Florida majoring in Biology with a minor in Disabilities in Society. Through her support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) program she co-published her research on Transient B Cell Depletion or Improved Transgene Expression by Codon Optimization Promote Tolerance to Favor VIII in Gene Therapy.

Currently Sherin is a Ronald E. McNair scholar working with Dr. Luciana Shaddox where she is comparing the response to treatment in primary verses permanent dentition in patients with localized aggressive periodontitis. She presented her research at the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) conference for which received the highly competitive Clinical Impact Award.

Her hobbies include exploring new food, watching movies, and reading. Her future plan is to pursue a DMD/PhD dual degree with a focus in microbiology. Her interest in this career path will allow her to bridge the gap between understanding the overall health of patients from a scientific and clinical point. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree at Boston University.
